Polish philosopher and historian of social thought, co-founder of the Warsaw school of historians of ideas, translator.
Immediately after World War II, in addition to Leszek Kolakowski, Adam Schaff and Tadeusz Kronski, chief ideologue of Stalinism in Marxist philosophy. Engaged by the Party to fight niemarksistowskimi philosophical trends occurring in Poland (mainly Lwow-Warsaw School - He wrote a pamphlet About minded philosophical and socio-political Tadeusz Kotarbiński, TKKN, Warsaw, 1951) and made one of the pillars of the Marxist camp in the area ideology, gradually passed to the revisionist position.
Teacher of many generations of Polish philosophers and sociologists - including John Garewicza, Mark J. Siemka, Zbigniew Kuderowicza, Adam Sikora, Jerzy Szackiego, George Ładyki. Published a study of Rousseau: the solitude and community (1964), in which he starred as a historian of ideas, rysujący broad sociological background for the individual history of John Jacob. In the collection of articles and worldviews Man (1965) dealt with both issues such as dispute Hegel and Rousseau, as well as Polish philosophical thought, and existentialism. In 1968, during the March events of 1968, was expelled from the Institute of Philosophy at the University of Warsaw and forced to emigrate. Since 1974 is associated with the University of Geneva (now honorary professor at the university). Worked primarily with the history of the French Revolution, utopias and collective ideas.
His book, Job, my friend was nominated for literary prize Nike.
