Ehhhh I feel like the title of the book is slightly misleading. Race doesn't enter into the narratives (only twice) so much as religion does.

However, one point made in the introduction was interesting. When race DOES enter the discussion there is a surprising lack of empathy/support from the freed white slaves to the still captive American slaves. Why is that?

This is an excellent guide for active learning strategies at various stages of teaching. Including a brief history of active learning classrooms and research, the guide provides detailed teaching suggestions for rethinking a course, teaching a course (how to introduce and reinforce, how to form groups, how to assess student work, how to integrate universal design for learning principles), and specific examples and teaching suggestions from faculty across the country.

This issue of New Directions for Teaching and Learning focuses on the move to intentionally designed active learning classrooms. SCALE-UP and TILE classrooms are described as well as considerations before, during, and after one teaches in an active learning space. Preliminary research on how the physical learning space affects student learning is presented.
