A really interesting and somewhat hard to classify book. The murder is really more of an appetizer than an entree. The more interesting story winds up being how a railroad tycoons love of horses led to my love of the summer blockbuster, jaws. I probably shouldn't have picked up a book entitled a history of the development of moving pictures , so I understand why the murder was included. It's a good read

A challenging, interesting book to read and, I assume, to write! Mr. Ball researches and tells the story of his plantation, slave and slave owning family from the early 1700's in the Charleston area. I'm imagining how difficult it was to get people who had moved away from that history to talk to him, let alone use their names. It was difficult to keep the many families straight and his organization was somewaht repetitive because he seemd to have separated the stories from true proved sources.
I would reccommend this book!… (meer)

I almost put this book down shortly after I started it, and that's something that I never really do, for no other reason being than my obsessive-compulsive disorder. But I digress...the reason I almost didn't finish it (and now I am glad that I did) is that it was set 150 years ago and eye-witness accounts are hard to come by. I guess I didn't trust the author speculating anything and wondering he was just ad-libbing to make it sensational. But you quickly see that it's not necessary for him to do that. It was also cool that it was set in Louisiana so a lot of the names were familiar and this is U.S. history and I can't ever really get too much of that.… (meer)
