Korte biografie
Had his own Big Band based in South London in the 1950s and early 60s.
Started work as a Cartographer and worked for many organsations up until the 1960s. Was the author of the very successful: 'Surrey Atlas' but due to a petty despute the book was published anonymously. In early 1960s, started his own Drawing Office, leading on to work and collaborate with Sir Martin Gilbert, the historian and official biographer of Sir Winston Churchill. They produced many publications together.
Arthur Banks died in London in April 1998.

This book remains an indispensable resource for any with a more than passing interest in the First World War.

A wonderfully comprehensive visual guide to the Great War. A professional historian looking for large-scale technical maps may want to look elsewhere, but as a reference for the average person with an interest in the period it is indispensable. All the maps are well illustrated and crisp, and the author makes a point of marking points of interest and describing important events relating to the map being shown. Covers the entire war, including the preceding Balkan conflicts. Naval and aerial operations documented and illustrated. As a neat bonus, there are added profiles of equipment and vehicles of the war (along the lines of "Four Important Tanks" or "Trench Equipment") which are also extremely detailed, accurate, and well-labeled. Large, two page overviews introduce every section to give the reader a context of the conflict at that time. Completely unbiased.

Even though it's an "atlas", so much information is contained in this volume that one could gain a general overview of the conflict as a whole, at least in a broad sense. Definitely recommended - only downside is the rather high price a copy tends to sell for.

The maps are nice and Banks annotates them with brief summaries, but it's a bit one-dimensional and they would be more effective in the context of a more complete history.

A well done volume, but a bit of a dissappointment. The map scales do not give enough detail to be really useful. The book is an excellant overview of the war, and will serve non-military historians well. But it does not cover the actions at a scale that is usefull for understanding the military actions.
