Gr 3–7—Etan has become selectively mute since his mother left. He spends most of his time with his grandfather in
his jewelry shop. Delivering a package outside of his San Francisco neighborhood, Etan befriends Malia, known by
kids as "the Creature" because of her eczema. This novel in verse depicts a beautiful friendship, a dose of history,
and a pinch of magical realism set against the backdrop of the 6.9 magnitude earthquake that devastated the area in
1989.

Ethan - traumatized after his mother leaves - is unable to speak, his new friend Malia suffers from debilitating eczema, and his father and grandfather argue about observing the High Holy Days during the World Series. Set in a multicultural community in 1989, this story in verse weaves elements of history and magical realism in a memorable tale of families, friendship, and faith. This is a heartfelt book with main characters who are hopeful, young and who take risks. There are earthquakes --it's San Francisco in 1989

Plot Summary: Etan's summer break has just begun. He spends lots of time in his grandfather's jewelry and watch workshop, walking Mrs. Hershkowitz's dog, and occasionally delivering items for Mrs. Li. It's the first summer he's not playing baseball with a friend and getting hugs from his mom. His mom left a few months ago to stay in the hospital, which was a big surprise because Etan always thought she was super happy and positive. It's been a rough change and Etan just doesn't talk anymore. One of his deliveries brings him to a house in woods where Malia lives, then another delivery, and another, until he is going to see Malia. Malia doesn't leave her house because of her extreme eczema. Because she was bullied at school, she's now homeschooled, but with Etan she heads outside with a blanket over her protecting her skin. She teaches him to listen to the trees and Etan actually talks to her. Will they be able to help each other? Can Etan's idea help her skin?

Controversial Issues: none

Personal Thoughts: This book was well-written and easy to read. It won't be the most popular book, nor is it a super important book, but I liked reading about the Jewish immigrant experience and I liked the friendship between Etan and Malia. I'm honestly still a little unclear if the book has a magical element or if it's just talking about the Jewish legend of the Golem.

Genre: historical fiction but read like realistic fiction

Pacing: medium fast, written in verse
