Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an advanced copy.

This is unlike any survival story you will ever read.

Climbing a hill to get phone reception after you have survived a plane crash seems like a smart thing to do, right? Not when that hill opens a doorway to a spirit world and awakens an ancient evil....enter the Witiko, or Wendigo. Not only will Jared have to survive the Canadian bush wilderness, he must stay one step ahead of a Cree legend who is hungry for human flesh. With the help of Kyle, a local Cree teenager, Jared must find strength and courage he never knew he possessed to fight this monster and get home to safety.

This was a great suspense story, but also gives the reader a look into Cree culture. I have always enjoyed reading about the Wendigo legend, but never have I found a book that makes it the main character.

A creepy, fast-paced novel based on First Nation lore. The book deals with race and stereotypes throughout, and does so sensitively and thoughtfully. I found Jared to be more than a little insufferable at the beginning of the book -- which was great because it highlighted his character development, but it also made it difficult for me to connect with him as a protagonist. But overall, very well done and chilling.

A exceptional historical novel set in 1947 in Leipzig, Soviet-occupied Germany. Bass's vividly detailed and compellingly written story explores the effects of war and occupation from a unique perspective.

Growing up in Germany after WWII, Wilm and his friends defy the soviet occupation with pranks and after one goes wrong, have to escape. The story picks up as 5 teens (3 boys/2 girls) begin their journey to freedom, leaving their parents, school behind being chased by the Soviet and German police through the countryside finding their way to American occupied Bulgaria and settling in Munich.
