You'll see my decision, but as I type this, I don't know how many stars to give this yet.
It was damn hard for me to read, way harder than book 1. which wasn't all easy either. I walked away from this novel a few times, because Shane is not an easy character. He is trouble-prone and acts without thinking, he's a needy creature and... uuuuugh! But he's a good guy, dammit. Yes it's a romance, and as this precedes This Charming Man, I already knew he and Bash get together anyway, but the trip, man. It is not easy!

This is a great story. The five stars are for the author who created it, for her wisdom in seeking help writing about an artist, and about a ethnicity not her own (there's a bibliography at the end). I loved Ryan and I adored Ben and it was neat to see the other characters through Ryan's eyes - just the sort of mix you want in a series. This whole series has been great. But this one is my favorite; I am a sucker for artists.
That said... I'm distrustful of this publisher. The many typos are bad enough, but the two technical issues are worse: 1) You don't lube and then apply a condom. This happens several times - but not every time, which somehow made it worse; and 2) both hands are involved during a sex scene that happens before a cast is removed. Popped me right out of the story, that one. I wish there was a separate rating for publishers. They'd get three stars, for being smart enough to work with this author and for (apparently) sacrificing edits in favor of ethnic research and sensitivity reading. If you have to choose, then yes, that's the one I'd choose, too. But you should not have to choose! I'm hardly the only reader who notices these things.

Ssssssmokin'! 85 pages of increasingly heated thoughts, then actions, between three distinct personalities who are all sweet and loving individuals. I don't know what more you need. It's FREE and it's LOVELY! Go-go-go!
I'd love to have helped in final edits, to catch the few missing word and spare word type edit fails, but they're minor compared to the unmitigated joy of this story.

Another potential reader won't read it because of casual drug use. If you react badly to that, be warned. But for me, I just calmed my inner child, the one subjected to all the anti-drug campaigns that painted all drug use as EVIL. I know too many people now who used casually and aren't addicted. Plus, Steven's drug experiences serve as a great comparison later, when he is actually happy.
I have two complaints. One: it needed a copy editor to remove or replace words either left in or omitted during the last edit. There were a lot of these typos all the way through the ebook.
And two: Adrian's character arc was dissatisfying, and the end goes on too long, and is overly wordy. It's been three years since this was published, so perhaps the author has been learning their craft. :)… (meer)
