I enjoyed this book from start to finish--in fact, had I not been reading it at such a busy time of year, I would have finished it much more quickly! I liked the fact that the main character, although being a bit acerbic, makes you root for her success from the outset. I also enjoyed the author's take on magic, and discrimination even within the community of magic-users. The action is fast-paced and there are many twists and turns in the plot, but not at the expense of interesting characters. Definitely recommended!… (meer)

Aside from the fast pace, this book doesn't have much going for it. A retired PI killing himself with booze and cigarettes following the explosive death of his scientist lover is abducted and saved by aliens who want him to recover a portal for him. He speaks like a poor imitation of a 50s noir detective but the woman scientist who wanted his lover answers in pure 21st century. He goes from place to place learning what happened and almost not surviving encounters with the villain and somehow comes up with a plan which works, but is really deus ex machina. I wonder why writers who don't want to plan good mysteries use the format.… (meer)

A hard boiled PI meets the Twilight Zone, kind of. Our PI doesn't carry a gun, like Sam Spade, but when he falls for a dame, she's a tough cookie & he falls all the way, like Mike Hammer. Toss in dimensional space travel & a really smart, nasty villain & you have a fast paced, fun read. The characters were well done. Not cliched completely, but all well drawn with logical motives, faults & idiosyncrasies. Our hero isn't superman nor is he perfect, but he's a pretty likable guy with some almost fatal flaws. The villain is almost too smart & egocentric, but he keeps the pace moving & provides plenty of twists as the story progresses. All in all, it was a fun read & a complete book in itself, although there are additional books in the series. I look forward to reading them.… (meer)

The future is filled with incredible temperature variables and the government has cured drug addictions. In the midst of this, an immensely obese drug lord has his eyes on a roaming genetic addictive drug that is impervious to the govenment's cures.

The geneticist who has caught the eye of the drug lord thinks he's just trying to cure a rare genetic disorder - little does he realize that he may have created the ultimate weapon.

Synergy is a compelling read that deals a catharsis but leaves an open ending. It's fun and thought-provoking.… (meer)
