This would be good for primary and intermediate students. For both levels it would be a good example of folktales and then could be compared to folktales from other cultures which could lead to discussion on how cultures are different and similar. The book is made of detailed pictures depicting aspects of Native culture, as well as a message of karma and what can happen when you undermine others.

How Snowshoe Hare Rescued the Sun is a simple story from the Yuit people who share language and stories with their Inuit relatives in Alaska. The story tells the tale of demons who stole the sun and drag it back to their cave. Several animals attempt to get the sun back, but only snowshoe hare is successful and when he kicks the sun back into the sky he also creates the moon and starts. The illustrations have a very traditional feel to them which helps add to the traditional feel of the story. The tone is serious, but also inspirational. The illustrations are colorful though simple and easy to understand. I don’t know if I would pick this book up again, but I do think there is value in the connection of cultures.

Alaskan Connection: Yuit people and their relation to Inuit people, Tundra Animals
Activity: Discuss and learn about Yuit people and how they are related to Inuit people, explore Alaskan History, and learn about and share projects based on tundra animals.

I think this is one of my favorite ones because it talks about how different cultures celebrate New Years. For some Cultures they celebrate New Years on a whole different day then we do. It even talked about why we celebrate New Yeas the way we do. Which was interesting because i had no idea there was an actual reason why we popped fireworks at midnight but apparently there is. It was believed that as the year grew weak and was about to die that demons would grow stronger and more dangerous then before, they believed the only way to scare them off was by making loud noises. Also in the 19th century cowboys when it hit midnight would go outside and fire off their pistols to make noise.… (meer)

This story of New Year is telling us about the different cultures' New Year and how they celebrate. It also tells us the different beliefs the cultures have about the New Year. The different cultures also have different symbols that represent certain components of New Years celebration. Though we are all from different parts of the world, we are all connected by some things.
