Ben Kincaid has joined a prestigious litigation law firm after over a year at the D.A.’s office in Oklahoma City. Now in Tulsa Ben begins his new job at Raven, Tucker & Tubb as an associate joining 5 others in the new class as they start the climb up the corporate ladder to a partnership. Assignment on the 1st day by supervising attorney Richard Derek is to prepare for an adoption proceeding for an employee of the firm’s biggest client but more importantly the client that brings the highest revenue to the firm. Little could he have imagined the impact that 1st client meeting would have on his life.

The legal profession’s loss of William Bernhardt as an attorney is assuredly a reader’s good luck! Every aspect of his writing places you within the scene from location to character development to narrative. If the characters were real and a reader walked into the room, the reader would be able to identify and begin speaking with each person by name.

I liked that the author gave a nod to his home state of Oklahoma for the opening settings of Ben Kincaid’s employment. The addition of the adoptive child Emily being a special needs child having a rare disorder of Korsakov’s Syndrome is pivotal to the adoption case and a disorder that I was unaware.

I am disappointed that the description of Christina’s hair
“Her strawberry hair was pulled back and twisted in a strange cross between a French braid and a librarian’s bun.”
It is beyond time to stop reference to a librarian’s hairstyle. I hope Mr. Bernhardt addresses stereotyping in The Red Sneaker Writing instruction opportunities.

I can’t wait to read what follows for Ben Kincaid.

This is the third book in the Ben Kincaid series. He's a lawyer in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He has a single practice and is barely making ends meet when he is approached by the Apollo Corporation to be one of their in-house attorneys. Despite concerns from his paralegal Christina, he decides to take the job for the financial security.

Ben is greeted with open arms and effusive praise by the head of the legal department. Other lawyers aren't so excited to see him. The firm is filled with rivalries, back-stabbing, and sexism. And Ben's idealism doesn't look like it makes him a good fit for the company. His first job is a case where the company is being sued because a faulty design has caused the death of a young man. Luckily for Ben, the lawyers the victims hired is not at all competent and Ben quickly wins the case.

But then a fellow attorney is murdered, and his body is found in Ben's car outside his apartment. Ben is given a week by the Chief of Police to find the real murderer, or the Chief will have him arrested. Ben has to dig into relationships and rivalries to find out who murdered his fellow attorney.

Meanwhile, the Tulsa police are very busy trying to find a serial killer who is leaving headless and handless bodies of teenage girls around town. Ben's investigation and the police investigation do come together eventually.

I enjoyed this book and really liked Ben who was a hard-working, smart, and ethical attorney. The side cast were also well-developed characters. Even though this is the third in the series and only the first I have read, I didn't feel like I was missing anything. I am tempted to read earlier and later books in this series because I enjoyed the characters and the writing.

I did like this book for what I was wanting. I will though get another book that will go more in-depth later.

If you want a book that goes into detail about story structure, this book is not for you. The one thing about it, he does warn you what type of book this is upfront. I do recommend this book if you want an introduction or a refresher on story structure.

This book was highly informative given its directness. It tells you the different points in each act and the acts themselves. I enjoyed how he had a small diagram showing each example as we went along. I am a visual person and it helped me understand wherein the story he was talking about. It was a great refresher, and I learned things.

It was an easy read and to a faster reader, a day read. This was a book that is great for someone who is getting started and wanted to know key points on the structure. This book is the first one in a series and I will be getting the rest.

Sometimes the monster is not really under the bed but in the acts that go unwitnessed. WILLIAM BERNHARDT does not hide the social horror of an act unwitnessed.
