Book if travel to France
Another general overview of the French Revolution as it seems i need multiple retellings to be able to keep the events, moods and people straight (and this won't be my last general history either). This book covers the topic admirably. Straightforward, written for clarity and not to score author points, i appreciated his viewpoint and story stresses. For the whole story - soup to nuts in 400 pages- can't be beat.
I really enjoyed reading the letters of Maria, Marie, and Mercy. I would have given this book 4 stars except for the fact that the author decided to leave out some of the content of some of the letters. Let me decide for myself what is repetitive or superfluous. I was disappointed not to be able to read every letter in full. Iwould have given the book 5 stars if the author hadn't interjected his own very biased opinion between letters. Still, I would definitely recommend this book to people curious for a first person accounting of Marie Antoinette's life if they are unable, like myself, to read the actual letters for themselves.… (meer)
Bernier is an art historian who undertook to survey the world in 1800, commenting on the events and personalities of the time. He is at his most expansive on France under Napolean, and on the United States in the time of Jefferson as the president. He is less persuasive, and less detailed, on Africa, and the Orient, but still the concept of a computed tomogram slice, so to speak, of history, tied a variety of issues together in a very interesting way
