Everyone I See Is Luckier Than Me: Poems About… door Clare Bevan
A fun picture book to explain jealousy to young children.
Summary: The Story of Van Gogh is a biography of Vincent Van Gogh. It tells of his birth in the Netherlands to a pastor and his wife, and of his early intentions and study to become a pastor as well. Then, it describes his decision to become a painter, and tells about his travels throughout France. It also highlights his close relationship with his brother Theo.
Personal Reaction: I enjoyed the book. I hadn’t know much about Van Gogh prior to reading it. It is a book I think is best suited for older elementary students, not younger ones, mostly due to the length. I liked that the author included a timeline for extra information at the end of the book. But, the flow of the story is a little choppy.
Extension Ideas: This is a good book to read when learning about the arts of the 19th century. Students could create an “impasto” piece of artwork. They could also study the works of Van Gogh, write about and create their own version of their favorite.… (meer)
