Blankley gives his opinions on what this Country needs to be a power through the 21st Century, which includes reinstituting a military draft and basically adopting conservative values. Clearly, the Obama Presidency is NOT his vision of what this Country needs. Fans of conservative talk radio will probably agree with his views and like the book, Obama supporters will probably see it as an expansion of the Bush-Cheney legacy.

The author is trying to obligate our country to a religious war that he (and nobody else) has a right to commit us. Blankley likes to point out Muslim atrocities and ignore Christian aggression. The only point I will concede is I agree with the author that we should end all American wars every 2 years and then require Congress to authorize any future war efforts.

There is something of a cottage industry in books that detail the ongoing rise of Islamic fundamentalism, the European demographic crisis, and the clash of cultures between the West and the Islamic states. (Bat Ye’or Eurabia is one of the better-known works in this genre, but there are many others.) That’s fine, as this is an important topic that warrants further discussion (and action), and Tony Blankley’s 2005 work fits in well with the “first generation” of similar works.

Though it begins with the clumsy artifice of a nightmare future scenario of an Islamic cultural and legal domination of Europe (and subsequent American reaction), it’s well-written and engaging.

Blankley argues that we in the West -- from the standpoint of 2005 – are witnessing the rise of an increasingly militant, expansionist Islamic world that threatens the stability, security, and culture of Europe, the United States, and whatever other parts of the world we might choose to include in “the West.” His solution is that Western nations must collectively and individually mobilize against what is, in many ways, the archetypal “clash of civilizations.” Terrorism is just one of the tools of militant Muslims, and it’s a major problem, but certainly not the only one. Looking back, I think it’s clear that the West did *not* (at least collectively) mobilize against Islamic cultural or other threats (the U.S. is more alone now than ever in Iraq and Afghanistan, for example), and even individually, weariness seems to have set in, with the urgency of 9-11 having mostly worn off, despite the myriad of pinprick terrorist attacks suffered in the West since 2005. There are counter-examples, to be sure, including several anti-Islamic referenda undertaken in the last few years in Switzerland and the extremely public anti-headscarf law passage in France. But the problems that Blankley identified in 205 haven’ gone away, and the West doesn’t seem to have done much to mitigate them in the past five years.

It is inevitable that a book of this nature is somewhat perishable, and now, five years after its publication, Blankley should probably write an expanded and updated second edition. I appreciated Blankley’s final chapter in which he offers a series of policy and cultural changes to combat Islamic fundamentalist terrorism, and would very much like to see this section expanded, even as I disagree with some of his prescriptions (e.g., it is entirely unclear that continually enhancing the invasiveness of TSA inspections of passengers actually enhance security aboard aircraft).

I give this book 3.5 stars out of 5. Had I read it in 2005 when first published, I probably would have rated it somewhat higher. For a somewhat better work on the same topic, I would suggest the slightly more recent (and “meatier”) America Alone (2006) by Mark Steyn.
