Debby Boone

This book was good for children looking at daily routines and remaining positive. I liked that this book had great language. It was descriptive and clear. The author does a great job of really describing the actions the girl goes through in her day to day life such as riding the bus. She also does not just write" and then we get on the bus". She writes about what the bus is like while riding it and the things that go on throughout the ride. The poetry had a clear rhyming pattern but the words that the author chose were also great in terms of telling a story not just rhyming. For example the author describes one child's action on the bus with sound effectives and descriptive words and phrases such as "whirled around to face front". These really help children remain interested in the book and also comprehend it. The reason for writing this book was to provide a more advance style of poetry that was not overly complex that also taught the readers to be positive no matter what life throws at you.… (meer)

This book is a biography about Debby Boone a famous singer of the 1970's, daughter of Pat Boone, a famous singer of the 1950's. The book gives information about how she and her sisters first sing with their father when they were teenagers and then goes on to tell how she, Debby Boone, becomes a solo artist and even wins a Grammy award and is the first member of the Boone family to win an Oscar.

I enjoyed reading this book, biography books, like this one; really help provide a clearer picture into the lives of the subject. I especially liked how the book described her as a teenager who had problems dealing with her father’s strictness; the book gave great examples of her home life as well as her singing career. The illustrations, which were actual photos of her, were a perfect companion with the book. As some of the details were given, there was a picture to go with them, which is always nice.

I would have my class write in their own words what they think the definition a biography is, and also write about whose biography they would be most interested in reading, and then share their thoughts with the rest of the class. For a fun biography project, I would also have the students get with a partner and interview each other to write a semi-biography. They would fill-in a simple premade questionnaire sheet, and then introduce each other to the rest of the class, using what they had written, so they too could see what it was like to write a biography about someone.… (meer)
