A most welcome reference work by this noted author who is Emeritus Professor of Latin American History at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne. The period that is covered by this work is from the attack by Francis Drake on Callao in 1579 which toppled the idea held in Spain that Peri's remotnest and isolation was defence enough, rather than spend from the region's revenue for it. This is a well researched book that utilizes Spanish language reference works from the period and later to create this remarkable insight to the defence of this region, with only the local militia, and local workmen to contruct the numerous fortifications, in 1696 a small force of 300 men was sent from Spain to help in the defence against assaults, such as the lengthy period of Buccaneer incursions late in the 1600's.
