- Esther Brann was born in New York City and educated at the Art Students' League, Cooper Union, the National Academy of Design, and the Fontainebleau School of Fine Arts in France. She returned to New York after completing her studies, and when she had trouble getting work as an illustrator, began writing and illustrating her own books.
Her first book was Nanette of the Wooden Shoes (1922). She later illustrated works by other writers, including Edna Albert and Mary Jane Carr. Esther Brann married Dr. Richard Schorr, with whom she had a son.
