Jumping eighty years from the last weather books I read, it turns out meteorology has developed a lot in the meantime. :-) This gives a good overview of current understanding of how weather works, and its focus on New Zealand was a particularly useful view to compare with US and UK books. All told interspersed with wacky and quintessentially New Zealand anecdotes (strong wind blowing away parliamentary papers; the impact of weather forecasting in key rugby matches, etc).
