George Brewer (1766–1816)

A fantastic, grotesque and surprisingly readable gothic tale from the beginning of the 19th century, this is the tale of an ambitious Baron whose pact with the forces of devilry cause his his fall into depravity and melancholy.

Whilst archaic in places, this is far more readable than later and more famous gothic classics like Frankenstein and Dracula and much shorter at only 100 pages. Whilst there are plenty of idiosyncrasies in the text, which are deliberately preserved in this edition—including strange spellings, inconsistent grammar and long running sentences—it somewhat enhances the story’s place as a piece in the rich history of early gothic. It also stars one of the earliest appearances I have come across of the classic hideous witch look in a novelised format.

Whilst the tale’s strength lies in its dark fable nature; blending the tone of Macbeth, the characters of Gormenghast and narrative of a twisted fairy tale; it does let itself down in the heavily contrived ending to wrap everything up at the final page. In fairness this can be put down to being a reflection of the fashion in gothic literature of that early era, but it is a little jarring.

A fun little story which I recommend to any fans of dark 18th literature who are looking for something a bit off the beaten track… (meer)

Oh, azok a régi szép idők! Minő permanens majális volt akkor még a rémregényírók munkája! Nem kellett egy komplett norvég megye teljes óvodahálózatát kiirtani ahhoz, hogy az olvasók felkapják a fejüket - elég volt rögtön az elején bedobni egy rút, egyfogú, büdös boszorkányt, és Anglia érzékeny lelkületű hölgyolvasói egy emberként aléltak bele jegyesük karjaiba. Ha pedig még egy gonosz, igen gonosz, sőt, igen-igen gonosz bárót is szereplőül választottunk, akkor még a fenn említett jegyesek is rögvest összealélták magukat. És amennyiben ezen felül még veszélyben forgott egy kisded és édesanyja élete is, a személyzet (a konyhalánytól a komornyikig) is odaalélt a hölgyekből és jegyeseikből előbb képződött kupac tetejére, ennek folyományaként ott hevert aléltan a brit társadalom teljes keresztmetszete a társalgó padlóján. Mai szemmel nézve azért már ez a kötet inkább csak kultúrtörténeti értelemben érdekfeszítő. Egyszerűen ezek a szereplők túl egysíkúak ahhoz, hogy komolyan lehessen venni őket. Irritáló, hogy motivációikat kábé két lépésből kiabálják bele az olvasó arcába, hogy biztos megértse, az pedig, ahogy a végén azzal a csavarral helyükre kerülnek a dolgok... hát attól a kérges lelkű jelenkori ítész legfeljebb gúnyosan felkacag.

A short read, but extremely engaging. This book was written by an author almost 200 years ago and the themes presented in the story are fascinatingly relevant to today. The Hag, or the Witch of Ravensworth is supposedly the ugly, evil creature that was popularized in fairy tales.What I found surprising, was the end when the entire story was revealed and just who this awful Hag was.It was a great read and for anyone who is interested in a good, gothic story in the truest sense, ought to read this. Don't skip on reading the liner notes, either, as you'll understand the time period the author was writing in.… (meer)
