187. James Harlan, by Johnson Brigham (read 8 Apr 1945) On April 6, 1945, I wrote: "Tonight started a biography of of James Harlan, which I enjoy. He has just been elected to the Senate." On April 7 I said: "Am reading James Harlan. Old-fashioned biography, but good nevertheless. Would like to read other biographies." On April 8 I said: "Finished James Harlan today. He was born in Illinois in 1820, was elected Senator three times but resigned to become Secretary of the Interior towards the end of his second term. He died in 1899 at 79."… (meer)
