David Brin

David Brin is a scientist, writer, and public speaker. He was born in Pasadena, California, on October 9, 1950. Brin attended the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and later earned a doctorate at the University of California. He accepted a position as an engineer at Hughes Aircraft toon meer Company. Brin is a former fellow at the California Space Institute and serves on several government and nongovernment advisory committees dealing with issues involved with technological growth. Brin has lectured all over the world on such topics as space flight, ecology, and the search for extraterrestrial life. Brin deals with global warming, the destruction of the ozone layer, and pollution of Earth. His 1987 novel, The Uplift War, received the Hugo Award and the Locus Award. Sundiver is het eerste boek in de eerste Uplift Trilogie uit de Uplift Saga. Voor mij was David Brin een onbekende schrijver alhoewel hij onder andere ook nog uitbreidingen heeft geschreven op de Foundation-serie van Asimov. Een eerste boek uit een serie leek mij een mooie kennismaking.
Nu weet ik niet of al zijn boeken zo zijn of dat het nog beginnelingstrubbelingen zijn geweest maar het boek komt wat rommelig over.
Het verhaal lijkt in het begin over Jacob Demwa te gaan die met zijn persoonlijk tragisch verleden wordt meegevraagd op een missie om de zon in te duiken voor onderzoek.
Al snel wordt er aardse politiek bijgehaald waarbij de partijen zich hebben verdeeld in hen die geloven dat zij op aarde zijn geëvolueerd en zij die denken door buitenaardsen zijn neergezet om verder te ontwikkelen. De missie naar de zon leek de uitkomst op deze tegenstelling te kunnen gaan geven.
Dan worden er verschillende buitenaardse volkeren in het verhaal geschreven die veel verder ontwikkeld zijn dan de mensheid. Zij putten hun kennis uit een enorme bibliotheek waar de mensheid alleen bij mag als zij dat verdienen. Belangen van deze wezens bepalen hun acties tijdens de missie naar de zon, belangen die zowel persoonlijk als politiek getint zijn.
Lang blijft het vaag waarom Jacob nu werkelijk meegevraagd is en steeds wordt er maar gehint op dat tragische verleden van hem zodat het als lezer je niet kan ontgaan wat voor een impact dit voor het verhaal op zich moet hebben.
Het lijkt alsof de schrijver te veel ideeën in een keer in een verhaal heeft willen stoppen en lang niet altijd even subtiel deze in het geheel heeft gepropt. Voor mij haperde het verhaal hierdoor steeds even, het ergste op momenten dat er nog even expliciet uitleg werd gegeven over achtergronden van het door de schrijver gecreëerde universum.
De ideeën op zich vond ik wel heel boeiend waardoor ik wel verder wilde lezen. Maar de schrijfstijl was door de gekunsteldheid voor mij geen motivator om de andere twee delen uit de trilogie ook te willen lezen.… (meer)
