Alfred Henry Bromell was born on September 19, 1947. Since his father was a C.I.A. agent in the Middle East in the 1950s and '60s, he spent much of his youth overseas and in boarding schools. He graduated from Amherst College in 1970. In the 1970s, his short stories appeared regularly in The New toon meer Yorker. During his lifetime, he published two short story collections entitled The Slightest Distance and I Know Your Heart, Marco Polo and two novels entitled The Follower and Little America. He eventually began a career writing, directing and producing television shows including Northern Exposure, Homicide: Life on the Street, and Homeland. In 2000, he wrote and produced the movie Panic.
