If you ever wanted to learn how to contribute to Wikipedia, this is the book for you. Wikipedia and its associated Wikimedia Commons and other Wikis are all complex web sites with lots of details to learn. Even a former computer programmer like myself finds it tricky at times, but the culture of the editors is helpful and welcoming.

Of course, there are disagreements, some of them quite nasty, but it is easy to make contributions in areas that are not controversial. My only warning would be that some people find Wikipedia editing addictive.… (meer)

To start, this really is a guide for people who want to *read* Wikipedia. If you want to write for Wikipedia, you're pretty much out of luck, as there's only a little information about that. Even for reading Wikipedia, this book is fairly content-free. It has an introduction on how to find articles which are not obviously named, which is fairly useful, but isn't that difficult to figure out one your own. What I'd expected, even in a volume this slim, was much more discussion of how material gets contributed to Wikipedia, more discussion of the accuracy of articles, and of potential sources of bias in Wikipedia articles. There was some discussion of looking up citations, but given the problems Wikipedia has, there should have been more on that topic.… (meer)
