Brock Brower (1931–2014)

Lately, I've read a few essay collections from the 1960s. They've seemed both of their time and very current. This collection of profile pieces and personal essays, published in 1968, is a fine example of that. I suppose it's only been fifty plus years.

I have never read another book quite like this. It concerns an aging horror movie actor, perhaps modeled on Boris Karloff, but much more dark and devious. Brower creates a great atmosphere, and the goings on in the book are fascinating. Unfortunately, so far as I know it was never made into the major motion picture promised on the cover. Highly recommended.
