“I Have Down Syndrome” is a great text. First of all, I like that it is told with the help of people (of all ages) that actually have down syndrome. Included in the text are quotations from these people, like how Richie talks about bullies and says, “I don’t get upset when people are nasty to me. I wouldn’t want to be friends with them anyway!” I think it is best to learn about a disability from people who have it themselves. I also like that there is a glossary in the back that provides definitions to scientific terms like chromosomes, defects, and inheriting. These concepts are crucial to understanding down syndrome. Lastly, I like that there are plenty of photographs included throughout the text. It is helpful to see real people with down syndrome living life normally. I think the central message is not to be afraid to differences, but to just educate yourself. The more you know, the less you have to fear someone who is different from you.… (meer)
