Korte biografie
Ella Carey is a self confessed Francophile who can almost claim Paris as her second home. She has learned French since she was five, and these days enjoys chatting in 'Franglaise' with her dear friends in her long standing French lunch group.

Ella travels to France and Europe regularly, and, along with completing extensive research, has drawn on her many trips to Paris and other beautiful locations in France in order to craft the settings, history and atmosphere in 'The Paris Time Capsule.'

Ella has an Arts degree majoring in Modern European History and English Literature, as well as a Music Degree in classical piano. Ella reads widely, and her favorite authors are Ernest Hemingway and Jane Austen.

Ella has spent years studying the craft of writing and attends many workshops and seminars in order to develop her work. Ella has written stories since she could pick up a pen and has written seriously for the last ten years, working with several writing mentors, both independent and through writers' agencies. Ella has had her work published in the Australian Review of Fiction and teaches creative writing workshops in schools. Ella worked as a History, English and Music teacher for many years. She now writes full time.

Ella first read the poignant and fascinating true story about the apartment that had been abandoned in Paris several years ago on an online article. Ella had just finished a draft of a novel about a mystery surrounding valuable art ... and a love affair from the past. The similarities between Ella's work in progress and the true story in Paris were so striking that it seemed meant to be that Ella would throw everything she had learned from writing and editing her previous manuscript with an agency in London into a new story - 'The Paris Time Capsule.' It was the mystery as to why Madame de Florian never returned to her apartment in Paris that inspired Ella to write her own work of fiction.

This led to much historical research, a year of writing and editing and, finally, the completion and publication of 'The Paris Time Capsule.'

Ella is so entranced with this story, that she is writing another two novels inspired by Madame de Florian's abandoned apartment ...

The second novel will be released later this year.

Ella lives with her husband, two children and two gentle and noble Italian greyhounds who are always mistaken for whippets.

Lily Rose loved to cook, and she conscientiously worked hard, moving up in the kitchen brigade of Valentino's from vegetable chef to sous-chef, hoping to be a head chef one day running her own kitchen. Lily's mother has a very different dream for her daughter to marry the wealthiest bachelor in New York—a marriage appropriate for their place in society and ensuring the continuation of Lily's accustomed lifestyle. In 1942, lifestyles and dreams were changing in New York for women and men. The changes at Valentino's began the day that the beloved head chef, Marco, was drafted.

The novel portrays the differences in expectations and desires of dreams granted and crushed by societal status and family ultimatums. Add in the unexpected changes of war and possibilities deemed the natural course in employment were taken away for some while in the same context, unanticipated opportunities beyond their dreams.

The story immerses the reader in a behind-the-scenes view of a restaurant wanting to keep its elite menu and service for clientele with high expectations. Customers at the highest level of society did not wish anything to falter, even during wartime and those that made it possible amid restrictions.

A captivating story of relationships, from the mentorship and camaraderie within the restaurant to the dramatic change of spirits when family members are supportive or use pressure to influence behavior. I loved Lily Rose, Josie, Emmeline, and Gia; their strength, courage, and love.

Pregnant with her 1st child, Nicole is panic-stricken by a picture sent by an aunt researching family history. The image is at complete odds with treasured memories of her beloved grandmother. Will Nicole’s child ever be old enough to learn their family history includes a Nazi collaborator? There must be a mistake. Can Nicole discover the truth in Paris, or should the past be kept a secret?

The story is told in dual timelines by 3 POVs. In the present day, Nicole Beaumont wants to learn the truth about her grandmother, Louise Bassett, a housemaid, at The Ritz Hotel Paris in 1944. The past will be revealed from POVs by Louise and Kit Harrington, an American bomber pilot and older brother to Charlie, both flying missions over France from Stansted Air Force Base, England.

The well-written story is as heartwarming as it is heartbreaking. I wanted to turn the pages as quickly as possible and in the same moments slowly, particularly as Louise and Kit told of the past. It is a story of courage, sacrifice, resilience, duty before self, and honor above all.
"This was a time of history that seems incredible to us now, and yet that is only a whisper of a generation away, and I realize one thing is true. We cannot change what has happened, and we cannot fight it, but the best thing we can do is to understand, and to honor the members of our family who fought so hard for our freedom."
There is beauty in reading the Author’s Note, as the reader learns the author’s inspiration for the novel and the individuals that are not only characters in a story but lived the experiences brought vividly to life with the author’s creativity and gripping storytelling.

Grandma Louise's daughter found a photo of her after the war with a swastika on her forehead and being paraded through the streets of France.

Her daughter sent it to Nicole.

Nicole couldn't believe Grandma could have been a Nazi collaborator.

Or maybe she was and that's why she would never talk about the war.

Nicole had to find out the truth, but could she after all these years?

We follow Nicole, Louise, and soldiers as the story unfolds and truths are revealed.

THE PAIRS MAID will keep you glued to the pages as you live through the war with Louise, soldiers, The Resistance, and all the citizens trying to stay alive.

You will also hope Nicole finds out that her Grandmother is innocent because she can't think of her grandmother any other way than the way she knew her.

THE PARIS MAID is historical fiction and a mystery wrapped up into one good read.

Enjoy!! 5/5

This book was given to me by the publisher via NetGalley for an honest review.

This book follows two storylines centered around a grandfather's wish for his granddaughter to find a memento he left behind in his family home. One story is based in the 1930s and the other in 2010. It takes a different angle than most historical fiction about the times leading up to WWII, which I found very interesting and enjoyable (though not particularly action-packed). I read it quickly, as I was curious to find out what happened. The only drawback, for me, was a significant change in one of the characters near the ending, which I found somewhat implausible. I recommend this book to those interested in historical fiction.… (meer)
