Learn Your ABC ~ 3 stars ~
This is a weird alphabet book in that the letters are die-cut into the pages, so the child is effectively learning the stencil version of the capital letters of the alphabet with little gaps down the center of each letter to hold the paper in place, so O sort of looks like ( ) and D looks like |).
Also, the word choices for the letters feel a little off for young ones learning to read, including longer words like "airplane" and "wheelbarrow" and the super confusing "yacht" with its silent letters.
Still, I do believe my toddler was drawn to the shiny and glittery foil that fills in each letter and being able to put her fingers into the letter cut-outs. We ended up returning to this book and the others in the boxed set it came in much more frequently than I would have guessed when we first opened them up. She used and abused them so much the insides with their board book pages separated from the covers, and I had to tape them all back together at some point.
Learn Your Colors ~ 2 stars~
We are introduced to the colors green, red, blue, yellow, and pink. Each two-page spread has three things that are usually associated with that color, e.g., green has a leaf, frog, and snake. Each page also has die-cut sections that have glittery foil inserted underneath, so parts of the page sparkle.
It doesn't look like anything special to me, but my daughter revisited this book set a lot as a toddler, wearing down pages and leading to me to repair the book with tape at some point.
I'm a little annoyed that the publisher cut corners by recycling several images in this book directly out of the alphabet book I re-read yesterday: Learn Your ABC (Sparkle Book). We once more see the same butterfly, frog, ladybug, pig, snake, and tomatoes -- two-fifths of the images in this book. I suppose that could be counted as a feature though, like a little cross-book match game for the boxed set? But no, flipping ahead through the next two books, I don't see any recycled pictures.
Meh.
Learn Your Numbers ~ 3 stars ~
I'd forgotten this number and counting book also threw in some nifty alliteration, so we go from "1 tremendously terrific treehouse" to "10 friendly funny fish." It certainly makes reading it aloud a more pleasurable experience than the other books in this same series.
Learn Your Shapes ~ 2 stars~
We are shown eight shapes with one to three real world examples of each and a whole bunch of shiny, glittery cut-outs too. The only words in the book are the shape names.
Pretty basic.
This came in a box set that my daughter liked to play with a lot as a toddler, putting the books in and out of the box and touching the sparkly cut-out designs throughout the books. This one had to be taped back together just like all the rest from the excessive use (and possibly poor binding).… (meer)
