A great nonfiction text for elementary and middle school students, this title's reading level is very low and it's high interest. Callahan describes his experience surviving in a life raft for like 70 days after his sailboat sinks; adventures include fighting off sharks and killing fish & birds and eating them raw (I think--it's been a while since I read it). It made an excellent companion to the novel "The Cay" and probably "Hatchet". My kids really enjoyed my brief read-aloud (for a state test "parallel task") and it was read afterward by many of the kids voluntarily.… (meer)

This is an informational book about cancer with an overwhelming amount of information. This book provides information about what cancer is, how your body works, how your immune system works, the diagnosing of cancer, way to cope with the diagnosis, treatment, clinical trials, recurrent and terminal cancer, and where to get help.

Again, another great book to show how to convert from fractions to decimals. I really like how this book shows you exactly how this process works and why the decimal is equal to the fraction!

1. Main character
Cloning and genetic engineering

2.Write the summary of the book.

Recent advances in science have led two astounding technologies. The first of these is cloning. The second technology is genetic engineering. The future of genetic engineering and cloning depend on what we are capable of doing, and doing it safely. Scientist are conducting many experients to see how far technology can take us. Scientists believe it's just a matter of time before they learn what each human gene does. This may allow scientists to one day wipe out all defects and diseases. It will also make cloning and genetic engineering safer and easier in the future.

3. Write your feelings about the book in details.

Plants are also cloned, often conduct research on the environment. The plants are exposed to a wide array of chemicals. Scients study how the plants react. This allows scientists to understand what is not harmful to plant life(See p 33).

Cloning is also related to the environment problem. I hope in the near future, these resercher contributes to solove the problem.

4. Write the words, phrases or sentences that impressed you most in the book and explain why they impressed you. Or you could write your questions about the book.

Genetic engineers would mix the genes to get the best traits of both apples. They would strive to make an apple that is big and tastes great(See p 14).

I feel like to eat the apple, but is it really safe?
