May-lee Chai

This short story collection is really interesting, and focuses on the Chinese American experience in a way that I haven't seen done before. There are several stories in this collection which have a woman or girl MC whose father is Chinese and mother is white, and it was refreshing to see issues that come from being mixed race in that way. I also really appreciated the variety in this collection: while most of the stories are contemporary character studies, a couple felt historical, one was definitely set in the future, and the narrators—though all related to the Chinese diaspora in some way—had definite variations among them, as well.… (meer)
