Now I'm 62: The Diary of an Ageing Cricketer door Stephen Chalke
Depicts some typical villager characters with a very intense captain. The captain desperately tries to be modest but it is all about him and self deprecation. Perhaps all captains love to be loved.
One liner - very readable and historically important work
A normal cricket fan, even a historically aware one, is not likely to be familiar with Geoffrey Howard. But he was one of the most important of English cricket administrators who also happened be around when interesting things happened. He was the manager when Len Hutton's team won the Ashes in Australia in 1954-55, next year in Pakistan where the English cricketers doused an umpire in ice cold water, secretary of Lancashire when Jim Laker took 19 wickets at Old Trafford and the secretary of Surrey when Basil D'Oliveira scored 158 at the Oval in 1968 which indirectly lead to the ban of South Africa from cricket.
The contents of interviews that Stephen Chalke did with Howard forms the spine of the book, with background and details added from numerous other sources and words of the other actors. An immensely enjoyable read.… (meer)

Brilliant history of cricket's county championship from 1890 to the 125th season in 2015. Can be delved into as each double-paged spread is complete in itself, so can be a cooffee table book. On top of that it's arranged in decades. Tended to read a decade at a time and read something else...
This is a wonderful book about a larger than life figure, about cricket how it used to be played before the monsters came along, about the Cheltenham Cricket Festival - and about a man who, I think, although I couldn't find the place just now, bowled a complete over while the clock struck 12 at Cheltenham College.
