This absorbing book explores the reality behind the myth, maligned and praised, of women working at home for pay. Christensen, director of the National Project on Home-based Work, describes the experiences of 20 clerical workers, entrepreneurs, and professionals. She finds that home-based work has its advantages (flexibility) and disadvantages (isolation, lack of credibility). The case studies, fascinating as profiles of individuals coming to terms with their work and family needs, are combined with analysis of the "unspoken contracts" these women have made with themselves and their husbands. Of interest to scholars and general readers. Donna L. Nerboso, NYU Libs.
