I was angry with the book. It sounded interesting. I like characters around my age, and she was interested in the arts which I am as well. I loved the title and like stories about complicated mother-daughter relationships so I thought, why not? Well it was nothing short of awful. The characters were uninteresting. The plot, about 10 pages in was totally predictable. The mother was a selfish annoying flake, the father dealing with the beginnings of Alzheimers pissed me off. I just didn't care. The romantic interest for Delilah, god, I pretty much skipped over every page involving that relationship. To be honest, I have never been a romance fan. And Delilah herself? Not that interesting. Not bad, but not interesting. The only character I found myself curious about was her little sister who popped up along with the mother. Even she didn't quite seem like a believable seven year old. To top it all of, the writing wasn't all that great.… (meer)

Thank you to Gallery Books for sending me an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

I LOVED this book so much. I might be biased as I grew up going to the Adirondacks specifically Lake Placid my whole childhood, and this book brought me right back to ADK. The setting was very atmospheric and would be a great book to read in the winter.

The story is wonderful as well. There was a lot happening but it was done very well where I wasn't overwhelmed but instead felt like it added depth to these characters. While this is technically a story about a missing child, I would categorize it more as a family story about loss and love.

Speaking of love...I really loved Elise and her perspective. I appreciated that it was written in the third point of view to get a little distance from multiple intense themes/plots. Especially her husband and the blame they placed on themselves.

I just don't know how much more I can gush! I will definitely be re-reading this one!

The Summer We Lost Her is a story of a family, marriage and how our past can affect so much of who we are today. There is a big element of dressage involved in the storyline of this book, which I think for me was distracting because it isn't something I know a lot about and took away from the other elements of the plot. I can see how someone with a connection with horses would connect so well with this so that was just my experience as a reader.

I thought the book itself was well written and I enjoyed the storyline of Elise and her struggle with prioritizing both her family and her lifelong Olympic dreams. I thought it was very powerful to see a female in a situation where she was chasing a goal that was very important to her while also juggling a family.

The father Matt was the more "present" parent in this situation. I thought this was a compelling piece of this book because it was pointed out many times how worried others were about Matt being able to "handle it all" while Elise was away training. If the roles had been reversed in this family, there would not have been a single question about Elise as a mother handling the demands and needs of her family.

When their daughter, Gracie, disappears, not only are we left wondering if she will be found but also if Elise and Matt's marriage will survive. This book has family drama, suspense and mystery and it was an enjoyable and thought provoking read. Thank you to NetGalley and Gallery Books for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
