The first thing I will say is that I recommend any and every teacher to have books like this one in their classroom. This book is about consent and teaches kids what inappropriate touch might look and feel like. Not every kid has someone to teach them things like this, and as a teacher, it can be hard to know exactly what to say on such sensitive topics like this. This is why I think this would be perfect to have in the classroom for students to have access to in case one of them could benefit from hearing what this book teaches.… (meer)

One thing children need to learn is the difference between tattling and getting help. They also need to know when to tell and when not to.

In this story, Joseph's lunch is being stolen by a bully on a regular basis. None of Joseph's friends can or will help him. When the bully threatens him not t tell, Joseph does not know what to do. He eats outside by himself but is not happy about it. He decides to go and talk to the principal, but not tell him the name of the bully. When the principal explains that he is not tattling but telling to get help, Joseph tells him what has been happening. They decide the principal will just happen to walk through the cafeteria and catch Martin in the act.

A great story to use with young children, especially in the lower grades who tend to have issues with this concept. There are suggestions of what to talk to children about in the back of the book.

Dee Dee thought she had a lot of friends. She had helped others deal with problems and difficulties, but suddenly all her friends were staring their own clubs and Dee Dee wasn't welcome. She couldn't walk or run fast enough, she wasn't a guy and she didn't own a pet. Dee Dee was sad, but knew she could fix the problem. With the help of her teacher, she set up the Friendship Desk and asked people to sign up. Her friends realized, with both her and their teacher's help, that friendship was not a club and that everyone belonged.

Another good book to use with young children when they are leaving others out and causing hurt feelings. Suggestions are at the back of the book of questions and discussion to have after you read this book.

Claire is a young girl who is the recipient of unwanted attention from her Soccer Coach. He offers to give her individual coaching time, tickles her, touches her often and tells her she is the star of the team. He also tells her to keep what he says to her a secret. Claire feels funny, she gets that uh-oh feeling, but she is also not sure if she is making too much out of it. She tells her two best friends what has happened and how it made her feel. They were especially concerned that he told her not to tell anyone. When she tells her sister, she convinces her to tell her mother. Her mother ends up coaching the next practice.

This story is a good one to teach young children about the steps to take when you feel uncomfortable about someone touching you as well as what to do when someone tells you not to tell anyone. Once again like the other books in this series, there are suggestions for parents, teachers and caregivers of how to have these discussions with children.
