Padraic Colum (1881–1972)
Auteur van The Children's Homer: The Adventures of Odysseus and the Tale of Troy
Over de Auteur
Born in a Longford workhouse where his father was first teacher and then master, Padraic Colum grew into an important figure in the Irish literary renaissance before immigrating to the United States. Invited by the Fay brothers to join the National Theatre Society, he married the teacher and writer toon meer Mary Maguire, with whom he undertook several joint projects. The Colums immigrated to the United States in 1914. Colum kept up a varied production of verse, plays, fiction, criticism, and children's literature, together with active lecturing. His most extended teaching appointment was at Columbia University, where he and his wife offered a joint course in comparative literature. Colum felt that his Roman Catholic and peasant roots gave him a closer tie to the Irish folk than did the Protestant, Anglo-Irish background of many writers of the Irish renaissance. His poetry usually deals with common people and rural landscapes in a forthright manner. Colum was resolutely Irish, and his work for the most part avoids didacticism or sentimental nationalism in favor of straightforward presentation. (Bowker Author Biography) toon minder

"Joyce operates like a general," I [Padraic] remarked to Ernest Hemingway, who was in the shop [Shakespeare and Company, Sylvia Beach's bookshop in Paris, which first published Ulysses in book format in 1922]. 'Like a general of the Jesuits,' Hemingway said" (p. 170).
"Our Friend James Joyce" is a pleasant read with more casual and personal and life-affirming insights than we often get from more academic or scholarly profiles.
From a letter written by Nora Joyce to Mary Colum:
"The letter is undated; it was written from Zurich some time before she went into the hospital where she died in 1951" [James Joyce had died in Zurich in 1941, the family fleeing Paris from the Nazis].
"I really don't know how to thank you and your friends for your very kind gesture in sending me two remittances of 50 and 40 dollars. You can't imagine what a help it is for me to receive some financial aid as I have not received any money from England for seven months except 20 [pounds]. Luckily my solicitor was able to arrange that I get some of the royalties direct from America. It is very difficult for me because I have to support Giorgio [her son] who has absolutely not a penny of his own and can't get work here. I am so glad that you saw Stephen [the Joyces' grandson] and find him such a fine boy. Giorgio did all he could for him while he was here.
I am afraid I shall sooner or later have to sell my manuscript of 'Chamber Music' written in Dublin in the year 1909 and dedicated to me; it is written on parchment and bound in cream coloured leather with the Joyce crest on one side of the cover and our initials on the other side. If you know anybody who you think will be interested in buying such a work would you kindly let me know" (p. 238).
