Julie Dalton

This book is part of the Rookie Read-About Math series, focusing on teaching the concept of counting and making change with coins. The cover photo of a young child holding up change and smiling makes the book inviting. I think the material within is appropriate for pre-K to first grade student. However, the reading level is at the first-2nd grade level. At each turn of the page, a photo of the action accompanies the text. The book includes a short index. In this case, the index is superfluous. The book itself is about 30 pages. I do like the short photo glossary at the end. I think Julie Dalton intended this book to be a read-aloud book. The language she uses is simple and expressive. However, there is little sentence variety. I am sure there are better books that would be more interesting to teach this material.
In terms of the content, after reading this book, I have answered an mystery that has puzzled me for a while: why the cashiers at grocery stores always count up, rather down when giving me my change.… (meer)
