- Davies as an energetic, talented, humorous man who loved sailing, jazz, and Michigan football. But he was first and foremost a writer, developing his craft at college with a column in the Michigan Daily and honing his skills as a graduate student at the Yale Drama School. He moved to Hollywood where he wrote screenplays for MGM, RKO, and Universal Studios, as well as for Twentieth Century-Fox. In addition to his two novels, he wrote a Broadway musical, Blow Ye Winds. He won an Oscar in 1947 for Miracle, he was nominated for three others.
He was a member of the Writers Guild of America which since 1962 has awarded the Valentine Davies Award. He was also president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. [adapted from Historical Note written by Anna Marllis Burgard in the 2000 facsimile edition of Miracle on 34th Street]

At the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, the actor playing Santa Claus is discovered to be drunk by a whiskered old man. Doris Walker, the no nonsense special events director, persuades him to take his place. He proves to be a sensation and is quickly recruited to play Santa at the main store. While he is successful, Doris learns that he calls himself Kris Kringle and he claims to be the actual Santa Claus. Despite reassurances by his doctor that he is harmless, Doris still has misgivings, especially when she has cynically trained herself, and especially her six-year-old daughter, Susan, to reject all notions of belief and fantasy. And yet, people, especially Susan, begin to notice there is something special about Kris and his determination to advance the true spirit of Christmas among the rampant commercialism around him and succeeding in improbable ways. When a raucous conflict with the store's cruelly incompetent therapist, Granville Sawyer, erupts, he finds himself held at Bellevue where, in despair, he deliberately fails a mental examination to ensure his commitment. All seems lost until Doris' neighbor, Fred Gailey, reassures him of his worth and agrees to represent him in the fight to secure his release. To achieve that, Fred arranges a formal hearing in which he argues that Kris is sane because he is in fact Santa Claus. What ensues is a bizarre hearing in which people's beliefs are reexamined and put to the test, but even so, it's going to take a miracle for Kris to win.… (meer)
The real Santa is hired by Macy's to play the department store's Santa in the Thanksgiving Day parade, but has to prove in court that he is who he says he is.

When the sanity of Kris Kringle (an elderly man who believes himself to be Santa Claus), lawyer and friend Fred Gayley, must prove that he truly is Santa Claus. Wonderful story and very well written by Mr. Davies. Highly recommend.

This was the book that was the inspiration for the original 1947 film by the same name. When the sanity of Kris Kringle (an elderly man who believes himself to be Santa Claus), lawyer and friend Fred Gayley, must prove that he truly is Santa Claus. Wonderful story and very well written by Mr. Davies. Highly recommend.

I've loved the classic version of Miracle on 34th Street since I was a kid, so when I saw a library discard version of the story at a recent library book sale, I had to grab it. I knew it'd be perfect for my classic read for December.
Davies apparently wrote the original story for Miracle, and while the screenplay was done by someone else, Davies then did this novella-length treatment as well. Truly, it feels like a synopsis of the story. The heart isn't there. Mind you, it isn't bad, but it's far from good. The plot generally follows the familiar one from the movie, though Kris Kringle has the zoo reindeer literally eating out of his hand and there are also other minor variations.
Be aware that this is very much a story of 1947. There is a "colored" maid and gender ideals are blatantly espoused. For example, Doris Walker is described as being prettier and more feminine when she's less of a workaholic (women can be a multitude at once, k thanks).
When I added this on Goodreads, I saw there was a newer children's book version out. I can see this translated very well to that form. The vocabulary in this book is quite basic--it's safe to say it was written to appeal to juveniles on up--and it would condense down nicely.… (meer)
