Here is a delightful treat for all tree lovers, especially for the hikers and casual walkers who like to explore the Wisconsin forests. This 59 page compact, carry-on guide prepares one to identify trees throughout a relaxing, enjoyable walk. The writers of the Department of Natural Resources have done a thorough and expert job of helping the lay person become informed.

The booklet is dedicated to Fred Wilson, one of the original forest rangers hired by the State of Wisconsin in 1911. His pioneering efforts resulted in planting the one billionth tree from the State nurseries in 1979.

In the Introduction section, the authors provide short, helpful descriptions on vegetative tree reproduction, reproduction by seed, the formation of seed, distribution, how trees grow, and variations of trees. The main section contains entrees on 10 kinds of coniferous (soft woods) and 42 kinds of deciduous (hard woods) trees. Each entry has diagrams and very short notes on form, bark, leaf, fruit, range, and wood. The last section is `Tree Road Map' with charts for coniferous and deciduous trees and a section `Signposts to Follow in Using Your Tree Road Map'. The ending section is information on forest fires and how to prevent them.

With Spring season fast approaching and outdoors lovers waiting to emerge, this booklet is an invaluable source for all.
