"The problem for conservatives is that their distance from the new America has made many in their ranks sour about America itself -- not the abstract idea of the America they celebrate but the actual, living America of the early twenty-first century. This, in turn, has created a deep pessimism in a movement that reached its high point in the glow of Ronal Reagan's radiant optimism. As an electoral matter, angry pessimism rarely triumphs. As a disposition for governing, it will neither unite nor inspire."

This quote nicely sums up the E.J. Dionne Jr.'s main point and the books central thesis. Eisenhower looms large over these chapters, both as an example of what Republicans once were and as a comparison to what they have become.

This book was written before the 2020 election, before the insurrection, before a good chunk of the Republican party stopped playing patty-cake with fascism and embraced it wholeheartedly. If anything, Why the Right Went Wrong is bittersweet, as it illustrates the many moments Republicans could have turned away from this path and embraced Eisenhower's approach -- one where he recognized the popularity and importance of the New Deal but also balanced the budget.… (meer)

We are the change we seek : the speeches of Barack… door Jr. E. J. Dionne

I really admire Obama's prepared speeches, and I bought this book to use as a reference/reader/example when preparing speeches of my own. While I don't refer to it terribly often any more, when I first got it there were quite a few speeches I read through over and over, marked up, and borrowed structure and strategy from. I'm confident I'm a better speaker for it.

Excellent portrayal of his tenets for social order, the role of the individual with rights and responsibilities for political order and the betterment of life, for all. Freedom to pursue the individual’s dreams, balanced with the responsibilities to community. All is premised upon respect for the dignity in all others that we seek others to recognize in ourselves, and which we hold as our own dignity

Excellent book by three authors. The authors outline what went wrong with our democracy in the years prior to Donald Trump. They describe how these changes contibuted to the election of Donald Trump. Also discussed is the impact of the actions, or inactions, of Donald Trump and the members of the Republican party on the nation. The authors make suggestions about changes that need to be made now, and in the future, to get the nation back on track and to recover from the presidency of Donald Trump.… (meer)
