'The Belligerent was a 'Pompey' ship', it says on page 62, explaining that ''Pompey' is the naval slang term for Portsmouth.' The novel begins with the 'squat gray battleship lying on the other side of one of the basins in Portsmouth Dockyard'. This edition is in Nelson's Continental Library, no. 27, and 'must not be taken into Great Britain, the Colonies, or USA.

The British destroyer 'Eurydice' is involved in a battle with several Japanese ships in the Java sea in 1942. Although badly damaged, she manages to limp away and ends up at a small isolated island. The natives are friendly and help as much as they can with their limited supplies. The surviving ship's company have various adventures including flushing out a nest of Japanese and managing to sink an enemy submarine. They are finally rescued by an Australian ship and end up back in England.
This is a typical War story of the period, written by a expert in his field.

Toby Shad, the hero of this tale,is an ex-naval officer who after leaving the service is now almost on his beam-ends. Out of the blue he is contacted by the head of a concern involved with running a shipping line. They also own a off-shoot called 'Saddlers' which is a small shipyard on the east coast.. The yard also has a scientific section concerned with developing a form of radar. The owner invites Shad to become Manager of the shipyard and after some consideration he agrees. Thus begins a period of getting to know his way about and meeting all the employees and locals. All is going well until fire burns down part of the yard and a criminal gang descend on the area.
This is an exciting and very readable story which deserves to be better known to today's readers, It is not at all dated in it's style either.

Tells of the exploits of a young Naval Surgeon, during the First World War serving on a Q ship which is sunk by a German Submarine. Most of the book however takes place on the China Seas on board the 'Nanning'. Not long after sailing, the ship is boarded by pirates who are intent on taking some of the rich passengers hostage. This episode is without doubt the most exciting part of the tale. Later a tropical storm sinks another vessel with our hero on board, but guess what ? he survives all and wins through.
A really great read.
