Grim account of the stand of the Gloucestershire Regiment during a key battle in the early spring of 1951. You get a vivid sense of just what the soldiers were up against, in the form of mass attacks by Chinese "volunteers." At once a battle of mass, and a battle of squads. The Regiment certainly comes across as very well led and with tight morale, which may have been the keys to the relative success of their efforts, in that while they were destroyed, the Chinese offensive was seriously deranged. Recommended, especially since this battle is probably largely forgotten.… (meer)
