Dr. Carver was a black American who was born a slave and grew up to become a renowned scientist. I haven't read this book in years. It came from the library of the one-room school I spent the first 3 years of my education in.

This pictorial history of one of the greatest men of the 20th century was lovingly put together by his wife, Shirley Graham Du Bois, another great contributor to our culture and history.

A fabulous book !

With a foreword by David Du Bois and introduction by Lerone Bennett Jr, this is a very stylish collection indeed.

There are many pictures, some familiar, others less so, linked by Du Bois` second wife`s narrative, which quotes from his books, correspondence and articles where necessary.

The collection is equal parts the public man and the private man. There are family photos and photos taken with sundry heads of state, some obvious portrait photos, others seem to be newspaper pictures. We see W E B with his great friend Paul Robeson, at work in the NAACP offices, on various trips abroad and so on.

Primarily, I`d have to say it`a `fan thing`. If you want a more `warts and all` portrayal, then David Levering Lewis is your man.

Personally, I can find a place for both types of book - we need to be reminded that all great men and women have flaws, just like the rest of us. At the same time, we should value people like W E B for their insights and activism.

A fabulous book !

I bought this book (my copy is a shabby and rather battered old ex-library copy) without particularly having high expectations for it. Just to prove me wrong, old S G Du B has produced a minor classic.

The writing style conveys her personality from the start - warm, sassy, compassionate, funny, clever. More than anyone else (including WEB himself) she brings WEB the man to life.

The high point for me is the description of his life as a travelling teacher in rural black communities in his youth - the hardships, the very real danger, his commitment to seeing a thing through once he started it.

Du Bois had acquired a few scars on his way through life, particularly with regard to the death of his first child, who had apparently been refused hospital treatment on the grounds of colour. Also, he had dealt with graphic descriptions of lynchings in his work for the NAACP - over 300 in the period 1914 - 1918 alone. Shirley seems to have been the ideal partner for a man who could be quite troubled.

The other side of the coin is that whenever WEB decided to throw a tantrum, Shirley was there with a pin to prick the bubble of pomposity.

I can understand that some have reservations about the influence the second Mrs Du B had on her husband, particularly with regard to her Communist sympathies. Still, taking this book on it`s merits, it`s definitely worth a read.
