When gun fighter Morgan Atwater returns to Cross Creek to make amends with his wife and son he abandoned 15 years earlier, his reputation means there will be no peace. The local psychotic Marshall is determined to force him into a fight and Atwater manages to avoid that until the Marshall includes Atwater's family in the dispute. Dugan presents us with a fast read with many of the cliches of the genre.

The story of Crazy Horse and the conquest of the Indian Nations from a fictional Indian perspective. The author attempts to perceive the events from the tribal viewpoint of the Sioux. The story begins well but ends somewhat choppily at the very end as the author jumps around in vocal narrative while tying up loose ends and threads. For all that, is it an interesting historical fiction read.

* I will argue with the editorial comment of "impeccably researched" I found it to have several glaring errors. However to someone who has not studied the period it would most likely not be noticeable. However I suggest taking the story with a grain of salt regarding the actions of the whites and their "pure" motives. I will give Mr. Dugan credit for not giving Custer any shining moment - the man should be vilified for his overweening pride, if nothing else.

Mr. Dugan (a pseudonym for Charlie McDade) did five novels about Indian leaders in the War Chiefs series that I know of. I believe the order is as follows.

1. Chief Joseph
2. Geronimo
3. Crazy Horse
4. Sitting Bull
5. Quanah Parker
