- Elisabeth Elo is the author of the suspense novels, FINDING KATARINA M. and NORTH OF BOSTON, which was chosen by Booklist as a Year's Best Crime Novel Debut. Elisabeth grew up in Boston, attended Brown University, and earned a PhD in English from Brandeis. She worked as a children's magazine editor, a high-tech product manager, and a halfway house counselor before starting to write fiction.

Fun mystery with a strong female.
4.5 stars. It's always splendid when the last book of the year is a brilliant one. A tough, smart woman and ships are two of my favorite things. This book has both as well as a good plot and some interesting supporting characters. This is Elo's debut--cannot wait to read her next one. (review copy)
A well written, layered story, but it is not a real mystery. The story is predictable and straight forward. What I liked was the characterization and the desriptions of environments and people's reaction's. I enjoyed reading it.
Disappointing sophomore effort after the excellent North of Boston. Spy novel featuring Washington DC surgeon seeking her grandmother in Siberia. Filled with CIA (whose recruitment tactics and inactions are somewhat not believable) and gulag horrors, but partially redeemed by suspense and by interesting takes on indigenous people.
