This first volume of the History of Chile by Encina first delves into the conquest by Valdivia, by the advance of the Spanish army from Cuzco, Peru; the establishment of Santiago as the first settlement; the incursions of the Spaniards into the south and the war with the Araucanian (Mapuche) Indians, and finally, the the war of independence in the early 19th century, up until 1817.
