"... one of the most pleasant travel books I have read for years - both learned and stimulating ..." -- Isabel Quigley, The Tablet

"...from the moment she sets off it is clear that we shall have to go with her." -- Lore and Legend

"Miss Epton creates the pleasant illusion that one is travelling with her." -- Times Educational Supplement

"Nina Epton is a traveller who is adventurous, stoical, insatiably curious and remarkably well informed" -- Guardian

"vignettes of the people, art, architecture, religion - everything indeed about this enigmatic land is grist to Miss Epton’s mill." -- The TimesVery entertaining. I try and read what I can about the region and this is honestly one of the better books out there. Nina Epton has once more given the readers a light-hearted study of a condition that some people find not amusing in the least. I, at the moment , find that I'm for the light-hearted treatment, as I am unlikely to change my current choices in this field. It remains as a fine treatment of the subject, with material drawn from the pre-birth control pill period.

A bit of sensationalist sociology regarding the mating process in France, at least as it passes through the prism of a twentieth century English sophisticate. It is a fun and often witty more or less chronological account of how French "Love" has been recorded, both in documents (paraphased) and anecdote from the "Courtly love" of Plantagenet times to the post WWII period. There's a good core of information among the epigrams.

This ia an account of the last five years of the Spanish Monarchy under Manual Godoy and Carlos IV. I think her light touch relieves some of the tragedy endured by these unhappy people. Napoleon, from a management point of view certainly did a good thing for Spain by confining them to stop any further mischief, for they were a sorry lot. There's a good explanation of the Goya group portrait of the family, and the chronology of the final months of the French diplomatic offensive are accurately laid out. If you are looking for local colour at the start of the British intervention, this is a very readable work.… (meer)
