Thank you to Netgalley, Ten Speed Press, and Lisa Fain for the chance to read and review this ARC;

A born and bred Texan, I could never turn down a book on the hometown, good and old, everyday and comfort food of Queso. Anyone who loves themselves an ooey, gooey bowl of queso. You'll find amazing examples of how often you can find Queso in our world and the history of how this delightful dish first came about as well as how it transformed into the dish and culture point it is now.

After that, you'll drive into the meat of the book with amazing recipes! There is everything for the general queso recipes to suggestions of what you can do to spice up this favorite. I'm already dying to make the Mexican Rarebit, Spinach Queso Blanco, Indian Queso with Jalapeno Chutney, Greek Queso, and Tamale Chili Pie!

The Homesick Texan’s Family Table includes an occasional classic North American recipe (e.g., mac & cheese, refried beans, potato soup). For the most part, however, the recipes will appeal primarily to cooks who prefer a heavy emphasis on spicy dishes. Most of the recipes include jalapeño peppers, chile powder, chipotle chili powder, other ingredients (e.g., peppercorns, mustard) that will add bite to the dish. Even the recipes for salad (e.g., apple-walnut salads) and desserts (e.g., snickerdoodles) call for jalapeño peppers or Chiplote chili powder. When one of these is not listed, other ingredients in the list include these as a component.

I have lived in Texas and have visited numerous times since leaving. I love TexMex cuisine, but my personal preference is for a more moderate approach to the use of fiery ingredients.

I would make so many of these recipes, there's no question I will eventually own this book. I read another review where a person remarked on wishing the book was organized differently "for those who don't read lengthy recipe introductions" that literally made me throw my hands up in disbelief! The "lengthy" few paragraphs of family or recipe history as well as the author's rationale for her personal changes are the most charming part of this book. What those people who skip straight to the lists of ingredients and directions are missing!… (meer)

A wonderful cookbook! Beautiful photos, great stories from the author's family memories, and delicious recipes from soup to nuts. The recipes are easy to make, written by someone who cooks in a very small kitchen and who therefore doesn't have a lot of specialty kitchen appliances or storage space for specialty ingredients. She includes a list of basic kitchen supplies to keep on hand, and buying suggestions.

If you like Texas and Tex-Mex food, this is the cookbook for you.
