Well....let me start out by making this clear - this book is not for everyone - it's depravity is graphic and I'm sort of uncertain what the purpose of it was - well, I guess from what I've read about the author, the events are supposed to be sort of autobiographical.

I picked this novel up because it had a Michael Connelly blurb on the cover.

The book deals with the nasty life of writer Bruno Dante, while he is dealing with the self-created downward spiral of his life, which includes dealing with his dying father and a return trip to L.A, during a haze of booze and anything else he can get his hands on.

Really, while reading this book, I could not find one redeeming quality pertaining to the main character - well, maybe other than wanting to see what despicable act Bruno would carry out next.

Also, it's not a crime novel, either, but I included it because Connelly blurbed it........

This book had a very familiar feel to it's writing style. Very obviously trying not to follow in the footsteps of his father, I felt like I was reading something pulled out of the mind of a less deranged, but equally drunk Charles Bukowski, which is incredibly appropriate as John Fante inspired Charles a great deal.

The story itself was well thought out, cleverly strung together by what I would assume are several journal entries, or thoughts drunkenly scribbled on dirty wet bar napkins at the tail end of an otherwise wasted night, probably spent drinking gut-rot wine and chasing filthy hookers.

I will not spoil the story with details of it characters but I will say each one was so very carefully written out that I felt like I knew those exact people, that I passed them on the street at least once in my life. I will reveal that I have in fact encountered a Fat Murphy more than twice in my lifetime and will probably have to endure that hard-assed pretentious personality at least once more.

Having read "Spitting off tall buildings" I was expecting the fast-reading, lean, prose that is capable of generating descriptions, of life in the fringes of society, that go in crescendo till they finally knock you. And while this, more recent and life encompassing, memoir retains the fast-reading and lean attributes the writing is just too plain to arise any emotions.

But my biggest complain about this book are the mentions of his father career, and shenanigans, so numerous and frequently completely disconnected from Dan's life. I can't help but think that they were included just to attract a bigger reader base, which is to say to sell more books.

At least one can read the book in a few hours.

20th Century Crime and Punishment, California style.

Internalized, drug addled, narcissistic, genuine and . . .

" . . . To our right was a hundred miles of Pacific Ocean. There'd been a storm and the sea was choppy. I began counting the sets of waves as they crashed in on the shore. We headed south back toward Los Angeles."
