2022 Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Book

What a fun early reader! Love the subtext with the illustrations. I know kids will enjoy this -- there are some stretch words, but the illustrations give plenty of clues.

A little boy obsessed with dinosaurs must get dressed after bathtime out of his dinosaur towel and into pajamas, but he insists no regular clothes will fit a T-Rex.

This is a very humorous story about a boy imagining himself to be his favorite creature – a dinosaur! What would a dinosaur wear when his mother insists it's time to get dressed? The boy and his mom have very different thoughts.

This book runs a little younger in audience with the bathtime routine and the dinosaur-obsession phase, while the text is relatively simple but includes more vocabulary than a basic sight words early reader. Nevertheless, children will recognize the antics and imagination of the youngster and hopefully get some laughs out of the silly attempts to put human-sized clothing on a large dinosaur.

The illustrations really help to sell the story, allowing the reader to see how the child views himself. The dinosaur’s attempts to dress himself should elicit laughs. The child appears to be Black so there is some attempt at diversity.

This book is the first reader in the series about bugs by Theodor Seuss Geisel honor winner Jonathan Fenske. The rhyming text introduces a happy scene of a bug on a log until there is a frog. The fog is an unexpected characteristic that changes the story and leaves the reader wondering if the frog ate the bug. Although the sounds affirm this notion, the fourth spread reveals a funny ending.
Colorful black outlined illustrations and large typeface make this book an excellent read for those progressing from simple words to sentence reading with lots of repetition. It is an excellent addition to a reader collection. This could still entice a 2nd grader at a lower reading level.
