Niall Ferguson was born April 18, 1964, in Glasgow. He is a Scottish historian. He specializes in financial and economic history as well as the history of empire. He is the Laurence A. Tisch Professor of History at Harvard University and the William Ziegler Professor of Business Administration at toon meer Harvard Business School. De titel van het boek verwijst naar de Italiaanse stad Siena met haar schelpvormige Piazza del Campo en het daaraan gelegen Palazzo Publico en majestueze Torre del Mangio. De twee belangrijkste organisatievormen van de mensheid zijn hier elegant naast elkaar geplaatst. Een openbare ruimte die speciaal voor uiteenlopende vormen van informele interactie is ingericht en daarboven de indrukwekkende campanile die de werkelijke macht moest symboliseren.
Anders gezegd, het zinnebeeld van de (soms) gespannen relatie tussen netwerken en hiërarchische ordes.
Met dit beeld voor ogen leidt Ferguson de lezer door een rijke geschiedenis van netwerken waarvan het bestaan niet altijd verborgen is maar de informatie die daarbinnen wordt gedeeld vaak wel aan waarneming onttrokken is.
In dit boek staan “prachtige” staaltjes van aanvankelijk verborgen informatiestromen die de lezer ‘op het puntje van de stoel brengen’.

Van kaft tot kaft een uitermate interessante studie die bovendien met een goede pen is geschreven.
