This is a powerful picture book that explains how the Cree language was stolen from so many. The story begins with a conversation between a young girl and her grandfather. She is excited to get home and ask him how to say "Grandfather" in their native language, Cree. He explains to her how his language was stolen from him through the residential school that separated him from his family and tried to erase his culture. The young girl helps her grandfather to remember Cree through a book she borrows from her teacher.
This is a powerful story that can be used to teach about the challenges Native Americans have faced. This story would be an appropriate read aloud for elementary grades.… (meer)
