I was excited to read this because I love military history and because Ruben Gallego was from my state. However, once I got into it, it was a chore to finish. I did like the history of the war in Iraq, but it seemed that most of the story was just Ruben's ego. It got tired really quick. I'm no wallflower either, but so much cursing that didn't add to the story. However, I did think his feelings about and experiences in the war and afterward did make it worth reading.
This is a biographical account of Ruben Gallego's military service in Iraq. Gallego is a Harvard educated enlisted Marine whose reserve unit was called to duty and became the most heavily decimated unit in the war. He returned to the states to become a U.S. Congressman and was in the Capitol during the January 6 insurrection.
It is a good read and recommended as a window into the horrors of war and the injustice of luck.

Ruben Gallego nació en Moscu en 1968, en la clínica del Kremlin. Ahí llevaron a su madre de urgencias gracias a la intervención de su abuelo, Ignacio Gallego, dirigente del Partido Comunista Español en el exilio. Nacieron mellizos, pero el primer bebe falleció a los pocos días. El segundo, Ruben, afectado de parálisis cerebral, vivió con su madre un año y medio encerrado en un hospital. Luego se lo quitaron y le dijeron que había muerto. Este es el relato de su infancia y su juventud, de su supervivencia como presunto huérfano en siniestros orfanatos secretos en los que se confinaba a los familiares no presentables de los jerarcas comunistas.… (meer)
Asombrosa la infancia del autor, y aún más asombrosa su forma de relatarla, sin ápice de rencor.
